Don't need reminders, haven't forgotten sacrifices of freedom fighters: Cong to PM

Updated: Aug 09, 2016 08:22 IST

New Delhi, Aug 9 (ANI): The Congress downplayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Yaad Karo Kurbani' celebrations saying that the sacrifices of the freedom fighters were ingrained in every Indian citizen and nobody needed reminders to recall their great sacrifices.

Speaking to ANI here, Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary took a swing at the Prime Minister saying that it is very surprising that 'few people' need reminders of the sacrifices which were made to make the nation free.

"After so many years they want to remember the sacrifices, I guess people like that need reminders. For those who have lived in this country and have been born in independent India, we are all living on the fruits of those people who laid the foundations. We don't need reminders because the presence of their sacrifice is in our every breath," said Chowdhary.

"All of a sudden this 'yaad karo kurbani' business is very confusing for people like me. But I guess some people need those reminders," she added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will kickstart the 'Yaad Karo Kurbani' celebrations today at the birthplace of freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad at Alirajpur in Madhya Pradesh to mark 70 years of Independence and 74 years of Quit India Movement.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu said yesterday that all the Union Ministers will visit 150 places all over the country associated with Indian freedom movement.

BJP president Amit Shah will visit Kakori and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will visit the birthplace of Birsa Munda in Jharkhand and Asfaqullah Khan in Uttar Pradesh.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will visit the Cellular jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Rewari, Haryana the birthplace of Rao Tularam.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will visit Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar as well as Hiranagar in Jammu and Kashmir.

Naidu further said that women Ministers will travel to the border to tie rakhis to soldiers on August 18.

Naidu will himself visit the Azad Maidan in Mumbai from where the Quit India movement was launched and Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, the birthplace of Tamil poet Subramania Bharathiyar and V O Chidambaram Pillai. (ANI)
