Tamil Nadu observes state-wide bandh over Cauvery dispute

Chennai (TN) [India[, Sept 16 (ANI): Tight police security has been deployed in Tamil Nadu to face the one-day strike called by farmers associations and political parties in the state today over the Cauvery river water sharing issue.

More than one lakh police men have been positioned all over the state to prevent any untoward incident.

Major political parties like DMK, Congress DMDK, MDMK, PMK Tamil Maanila Congress and lorry owners, traders associations are supporting the strike in Tamil Nadu.

Normal life has been hit in most parts of the state, especially delta districts. Private schools are closed but most of the government schools will be opened today.

Tight security has been given to central government offices, railway stations and banks including Karnataka-Tamil Nadu checkpost border near Attibele.

However, government buses are running with heavy police security. Karnataka establishments in Tamil Nadu, including banks and hotels, are being given strong protection.

The Supreme Court yesterday expressed its dismay over people taking the law into their own hands, and insisted that the state authorities take immediate preventive action. (ANI)
