Centre, J-K govt. must work in tandem to bring situation under control: Congress

Updated: Jul 10, 2016 19:10 IST
New Delhi, July 10 (ANI): In the backdrop of violent protests arising from the death of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani leaving 18 locals dead in clashes with security forces, the Congress Party on Sunday asked the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir Government to work in tandem to bring the situation under control.

"The government of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and the government of India must work in close coordination to bring the situation under control. There cannot be any space given to terrorists and separatist forces or to the forces of violence," Congress leader Anand Sharma told ANI.

Sharma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh should share their assessment with opposition parties and make efforts to normalize the valley.

"Home Minister and the Prime Minister should share their assessment of the situation and the actions they take to normalise the valley, with the leaders of the major opposition parties," he said.

Noting that there is a growing resentment among youth, Sharma said that it would be in the interest of the valley if they are brought into mainstream.

"At the same time all attempts should be made to bring the younger generation in Kashmir into the mainstream...that would be in the interest of the valley," he said.

Rajnath Singh had earlier in the day chaired a high-level meeting to review the law and order situation in the state.

The Centre has reportedly rushed 12 companies of CRPF to Kashmir to assist the local administration in maintaining law and order situation in the area.

Rajnath had said the Centre is working with the state government to bring normalcy in the valley. In a tweet, Singh appealed to the people to remain calm and maintain peace.

The mobile internet and train services are suspended in the valley and the Amarnath Yatra remains temporarily suspended and around ten thousand pilgrims are reportedly stranded at Jammu.(ANI)
