Renowned designer hopes to revive traditional fashion through studio in Imphal

Updated: Oct 01, 2016 08:00 IST

Imphal [Manipur], Oct. 1 (ANI): Manipuri fashion designer and makeup artiste Robert Naorem recently attracted a large crowd to his first fashion fiesta named 'Royal Runway 2016', held at Uripok Konsam Leikai here, and showcased a unique collection of Manipuri ethnic designs.

"When you look at the weaving and the handloom industry, Manipur is the place which is very rich in this context, but the weavers here don't have any innovation, ideas or creativity or the colour settings or using of the right technique or fabrics. The people who have professionally done designing courses and are into fashion trends, should get involved in weaving and try to help these weavers so that 'make in Manipur and made in Manipur' turns into reality," said Naorem.

Models from outside the state and 14 Manipuri models sizzled the ramp, showcasing Naorem's work like the hand-woven 'Phanek'and 'Innaphi', a shawl that is worn on the upper body.

Streets of Manipur saw the biggest ever celebration of fashion where a large number of people gathered to witness a unique display of the state's traditional attires.

The fashion street was set on fire by Sunsilk Mega Miss Northeast 2015 Jessica Marbaniang from Meghalaya.

"He is such a hard working person; he really deserves all this. I think he deserves more than this. His collection is amazing and nice. I am so proud and very impressed. Moreover, Robert's collection is also available at his studio at affordable prices," she said.

The academy-cum-fashion store was inaugurated by Femina Miss India 2016 Priyadarshini Chatterjee in presence of Manipur's Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Gangmei and Commerce and Industry Minister Govindas Konthoujam.

With this store, Naorem aims to motivate and inspire the youth of Manipur to become a part of the fashion industry.

The store would also offer make-up courses apart from designing courses.

"That is the first course I m going to take up, because right now, I cannot have the garments and apparel course. I still need some time and planning for next year to have my academy for apparel and designing. This is the start-up which I have right now that would inspire youth," Naorem said.
