Iran expresses interest in participating in CPEC

Updated: Sep 10, 2016 13:24 IST

Islamabad [Pakistan], Sept. 10 (ANI): Terming the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as one of the greatest projects in the region, Iran has expressed interest in participating in the USD 46 billion project.

The statement was made by Iran's Ambassador to Pakistan, Mehdi Honardoust, while addressing the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and in his meeting with FPCCI President Abdul Rauf Alam.

"Iran is interested in participating in the CPEC, which is one of the greatest projects in the history of the region. Pakistani textiles, rice, surgical goods, sports goods and agricultural products are in great demand in Iran," the Express Tribune quoted him, as saying.

Ambassador Honardoust informed that his country has the capability to help with the development of Pakistan's economy especially in terms of facilitating energy supply, construction of roads, railways dams and others area.

Meanwhile, FPCCI chief Rauf Alam informed that Pakistan can increase electricity imports from Iran but Tehran must first reduce the price.

Considered a part of China's One Belt, One Road initiative, CPEC covers Balochistan and Sindh provinces and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Baloch activists who have been protesting against the project say that CPEC is causing much damage to the environment and would not benefit the people of the region but alleged that Balochistan's abundant resources are being diverted for Pakistan's most populous province, Punjab. (ANI)
