4 cops killed, 6 others wounded in Dallas shooting

Updated: Jul 08, 2016 11:33 IST

Washington, July 8 (ANI): Four police officers out of the eleven shot have died after unknown snipers ambushed them amid protests in Dallas over the shooting of two black men by cops in Louisiana and Minnesota.

According to City Police Chief David Brown, eleven police officers were shot in Dallas, of which four had died. He said that at least two snipers fired from elevated positions "ambush style" on his officers, some of them in the back.

Brown added that there also is a search for a possible bomb in the area and that a manhunt is on for the suspects.

The crowd had gathered to protest against the killing of Philando Castile on Wednesday by a cop in Minnesota and Alton Sterling who was shot by a policeman on Tuesday in Louisiana.

People across the nation vented their anger and rallies were carried out in Minnesota, Lousiana, Chicago, New York and many other cities, reports CNN.

The shooting in Dallas happened as protests were underway.

Witness Clarissa Myles said "Everyone was screaming, people were running. I saw at least probably 30 shots go off."

Another witness who was at the protest said he heard multiple gunshots in rapid succession.

Video showed numerous police officers crouching behind vehicles. Others approached a location holding protective shields.

Philando Castile, a school food services worker, was shot in Falcon Heights on Wednesday, outside Minneapolis, when a police officer pulled him over because of a broken taillight, said his fiancee, Diamond Reynolds, who was in the car with Castile, along with her 4-year-old daughter.

"He let the officer know that he had a firearm and he was reaching for his wallet and the officer just shot him in his arm," Reynolds said as she live streamed the shooting on Facebook.

Another black man Alton Sterling, 37, was killed Tuesday outside the Triple S Food Mart in Baton Rouge.

Reportedly, when a homeless man approached Sterling and asked for money, becoming so persistent that Sterling showed him his gun and said "I told you to leave me alone."

The homeless man then called 911 and the police arrived and shot Sterling several times.(ANI)
