Fish and chips remain Brits' top takeaway

London, May 30 (ANI): While traditional fish and chips takeaway has maintained its popularity as the UK's favourite takeaway - 40 years after it first shot to the top spot, it is significantly down on the 1972 figure of 64 percent.

A study to see how the popular dish had fared over four decades found that it is still ahead of Chinese and Indian cuisine even though they have gained pace.

Research by market analysts Mintel found fish and chips were preferred by 39 percent of people in Britain as compared with 33 percent who opted for noodles and 26 percent wanting chicken tikka and rice.

The one time Friday staple has lost ground compared with 1972 when it was the outright king of the takeaway with 64 percent of the British nationals tucking in compared with 17 percent grabbing a Chinese or 11 percent choosing an Indian on the way home.

While fish and chips remain the number one takeaway dish, when it comes to a morning fry up, bacon and eggs have been panned.

Less than one in ten serve up fried food for breakfast compared with one in five in 1972.

And only one in ten go to work on an egg today while 40 years ago three in ten had an egg first thing in the morning.

The research to chart changing British tastes found that one in five adults begin the day with healthier options like fruit juice and a banana rather then a fry up.

According to the survey even marmalade has lost its appeal, plummeting in popularity as the must-have spread for 36pc of Britishers in 1972 to a cult following of just 7pc preferring it on toast today.

"A shortage of time, and the increased availability of healthier breakfast options explain the decline in popularity of the great British fry-up, which has not changed much over the past 40 years - but could potentially make a come-back if we can find ways to make it healthier," the Mirror quoted Mintel lifestyle expert Alexandra Richmond as saying.
