Our bodies and Earth will be ripped into pieces as universe ends

Sydney, July 19 (ANI): When the universe finally comes to an end, stars will disappear, the sun will go out and then the Earth and our bodies will be ripped into piece, says a Nobel laureate.

Professor Brian Schmidt- a joint winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize for physics - said this Big Rip might be the way our universe ends and it may happen "on literally a human time scale."

At a public talk by the Australian Astronomical Observatory in Sydney last night, Professor Schmidt described how our universe is rapidly expanding.

The expansion will eventually force our neighbouring galaxy - Andromeda Spiral - to merge with our Milky Way in about 3 billion years, he explained

While it sounds messy, the space between our stars means it will be less like a train wreck and more like two swarms of bees coming together, he said.

Nevertheless, it will irrecoverably alter our view from Earth.

"We will see stars but we will look out into an empty universe," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Professor Schmidt as saying.

According to him, only 4 and a half percent of the universe is made up of things we can see - atoms, while the rest is invisible. Dark matter makes up 24 per cent and dark energy the remaining 72 per cent.

Once this dark energy takes over, it will cause more space to expand, creating more dark energy, "which can then push harder against gravity, creating even more space".

"The creation of space eventually can happen even more quickly than light can travel," he predicted.

This could lead to one of the "craziest theoretical ideas" and one of Professor Schmidt's favourites - the Big Rip.

"You will see the stars in the sky start disappearing as they accelerate beyond the speed of light. Then one day the sun will go out. Then, not too long after, you and the Earth will be ripped into pieces," he noted.

Or it could end in a less dramatic fashion.

Either way, Professor Schmidt said, unless dark energy suddenly disappears very quickly the universe it seems is fated to expand and fade away. (ANI)

New evidence supports theory of cosmic impact 12,800 years ago May 22, 10:35 am
Washington, May 22 (ANI): Emerging evidence continues to point to a major cosmic impact 12,800 years ago as the primary cause for the tragic loss of nearly all of the remarkable large animals that had survived the stresses of many ice age periods, including mammoths, mastodons, giant ground sloths, American camel and horse, and saber- toothed cats.

Coronal mass ejection collisions can be super-elastic May 22, 10:35 am
Washington, May 22 (ANI): A study has confirmed that collisions of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), emissions of magnetized ionized gas from the Sun, can be super-elastic.

Climate change after cosmic impact may have wiped out wooly mammoths May 21, 11:45 am
Washington, May 21 (ANI): A new research has found evidence of a major cosmic event near the end of the Ice Age, which resulted in a climate change that forced many species, including wooly mammoths, to die.
