Skill development training for women in Manipur

Imphal, Apr 29 (ANI): With a view to empowering women by granting them economic independence, Self Employment Voluntary Association (SEVA) under the aegis of National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has organized a skill development training here, wherein the participants, mostly unemployed, are being trained on preservation, storage and processing of fruits and vegetables, and on the process of extraction of juice from the fruits. The program provides participants, an opportunity to acquire skills that can assure them self- employment. "It is difficult to find government jobs, but with the help of this training program, they can be self-employed and earn a livelihood," said Chinglen, Secretary, SEVA. A total of 30 women from Bishnupur, Imphal West and Imphal East districts were trained in marketing and entrepreneurship. Discussing the benefits of the programme, Gracy, a trainee, commented, "With the training I have received I can start my own venture. We can work as a group and it will be very helpful for us." Presently there are many self-help groups and communities in the northeast that are working to empower women through socio economic upliftment. Government organizations like Nedfi finance these groups while projects like MGNREGA, Swarnjayanti Gram Rozgar Yojna, and Indira Mahila Yojna generate employment opportunities for them. (ANI)
