Assam floods pose threat to national security
Jul 2, 6:42 pm
Dhubri (Assam), July 2 (ANI): The deterioration in the flood situation in
Assam is posing a major threat to national security, as a portion of international fencing along the Bangladesh border here has been damaged due to soil erosion. Reportedly, over 200 metres of the border fencing were damaged and a number of Border Outposts (BOPs) were shifted to safer places.Locals are leading for safer places in boats, as water has entered their homes and fields, destroying the stored paddy crop. The villagers have been forced to take shelter by the roadside as all their household items have been washed away in the flood.Legislator of South Salmara, Abdul Rehman Ajmal, on Sunday appealed to the Central government to take adequate steps to effectively combat an issue of national concern."Almost all the BOP's are flood affected, but only three of them have been shifted. All the others are in water and they are facing a lot of problems. It is my appeal to the central government that they should do something, somebody should visit here and tackle this problem because it has become an issue of national security as it is all along the border," Ajmal said. The Border Security Force (BSF) informed that they were regularly patrolling the flooded international border on the speed boats. The water level in various rivers of the state has risen due to incessant rainfall over the past few days, with the water levels of the Brahmaputra reportedly having crossed the danger mark at various places in the state.
