Security beefed up on Indo-Myanmar border to neutralise insurgents

   Jul 2, 6:42 pm

Moreh (Manipur), July 2 (ANI): With the Myanmar Government gearing to flush out northeast based insurgents from their soil, the Centre has beefed up security here, as the region borders the eastern neighbour, to prevent infiltration.

The Assam Rifles, over the past two weeks, has deployed additional battalions and stepped up security in the area, which is a centre for trade and commerce between the two countries.

Security forces deployed on the border are establishing new security posts, repairing bridges and are also stepping up the border fencing work.

Round the clock patrolling is done and both commercial vehicles and people passing through the Moreh gates are thoroughly checked.

The Paresh Barua- led United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), the SS Khaplang- led Naga Socialist Council of Nagalim and Manipur based outfits like UNLF, KCP and PREPAK are active in Kachin and Arakan areas of Myanmar and have set up their camps and training grounds there.

Myanmar had assured India of neutralizing these camps during Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's recent visit to the country.

India shares a 350 km long porous border with Myanmar that has often been used to infiltrate insurgents, narcotics and other illegal items into India.

Over time, India's relation with Myanmar has improved and both sides have shown their commitment towards rooting out insurgents from the region. (ANI)
