BSF seizes fake currency, banned drugs along Bangla border

   Jul 24, 3:40 pm

Gandhigram (Tripura), July 24 (ANI): The Border Security Force (BSF) recently seized a huge cache of fake currency notes belonging to India and Bangladesh, along with banned drugs during a search operation here.

The fake Indian and Bangladeshi currency notes worth Rs. 60 lakhs and 2.4 lakh Takas respectively were recovered from a house, just three kilometres from the international border.

The BSF also seized 449 bottles of a banned cough syrup, worth Rs. 33,000.

Acting on a tip off, the customs and the BSF personnel carried out a joint operation, and the money recovered was later deposited with the Customs department.

This was the second incident in less than a week in which the BSF had recovered banned Bangladesh bound cough syrup and fake currency notes.

Interacting with mediapersons here, B.S. Rawat, DIG, BSF, said, "The money recovered was after selling the cough syrup that was to be smuggled to Bangladesh. This illegal trade has caused concern to several Bangladesh authorities at different levels. BSF along with several other agencies are working hard to curb it."

The BSF admits that several pockets in Tripura touching the border areas are vulnerable to smuggling, hence the security personnel are keeping a strict vigil with round the clock patrolling in these areas.

With improving Indo-Bangla relations, India has allowed duty free exports of goods to Bangladesh except a short list of 25 tobacco and alcohol related items. (ANI)
