BMW hit-and-run: No additional jail term for Sanjeev Nanda

   Aug 3, 12:53 pm

New Delhi, Aug. 3 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday provided some relief to Sanjeev Nanda, the prime accused in the 1999 BMW hit-and-run case, by sparing him from spending some more time in jail, though it upheld his conviction.

Nanda, the grandson of former Naval chief Admiral S M Nanda, was directed to pay Rs.50 lakh to the Centre, which will be used to pay compensation to the kin of the victims of the 1999 hit-and-run case.

On January 10, 1999, Nanda had crushed six persons to death while driving his BMW car in an inebriated condition in South Delhi. He and his friends had then raced away after the incident.

A trial court in Delhi had then sentenced Nanda to spend five years in jail under Section 304 Part II of Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide amounting to murder) instead of Part A of Section 304 of rash and negligent driving, but later the Delhi High Court had reduced the jail term to two years.

The Delhi Police had then moved the Supreme Court seeking a 10-year-jail term for Nanda. (ANI)
