Dikshit pays tribute to 'Father of Medicine' Hippocrates in Delhi

New Delhi, Aug.7 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister
Sheila Dikshit today unveiled a statute of the "Father of Medicine", Hippocrates, at the Maulana Azad Institute of Medical Sciences here.Describing the ancient Greek physician as great, humanitarian and noble man, Dikshit said that physicians of the modern era should follow and pursue such professional principles in their life and treat patients with care. Hippocrates, who lived from 460 BC to 370 BC, was free of superstition and believed disease came from nature as opposed from the Gods. He is remembered for his impeccable professionalism, discipline and rigorous practice with noble views. He also wrote about diagnostic methods, diets, the importance of hygiene, disease prevention through public health and environmental sanitation. He based his medical practice on observations and on the study of the human body. He created a holistic medicine and started the first medical school. While referring to the modern dental institute called MAIDS, Dikshit described it as a centre of excellence which has been awarded NABH accreditation. She further stated that her government is keen to develop this institute as a dental university in the capital. She said the government is looking for a proper place for the expansion of MAIDS and its up-gradation as a full-fledged university. She also stressed upon the need of proper dental care as dental diseases results in other major diseases.Delhi's Health Minister Dr. Ashok Walia stated that the life and works of 'Hippocrates" would continue to guide and inspire the city and the country's medical fraternity.
