Traditional pottery declining in Rajasthan

   Aug 13, 5:00 pm

Jaipur, Aug.13 (ANI): Ttraditional potters in Rajasthan are finding it difficult to earn their living, owing to an inflow of terra cotta pottery from other states at a much cheaper price.

The potters have been in the inherited business of making and selling terra cotta pottery for decades. These decorated pieces of pottery are giving a lot of distress to the traditional artisans.

"No facility is given to us. The government does not do anything for us. We are in the business of earthen pottery and living with clay only. We are not able to earn our livelihood," said Madan Lal, a potter.

It has been witnessed that the potters are getting impoverished every day, as they are finding it difficult to earn their livelihood. Moreover, government has not provided adequate facilities for their business to survive.

While terra cotta potters in other states have been able to sell their products at cheaper prices, the provincial government remains blind to their local potters' problems.

" Pottery is coming, in bulk, from outside and so our material remains unsold. This is our livelihood; if anything gets sold, good for us. There is no government job for us. There is nothing left with us. We are surviving only on the business of selling terra cotta pottery. The government is paying no attention towards us," said another potter, Suresh Kumar Prajapati.

At a point of time, making pottery was considered an art. However, the deplorable conditions of these traditional artists due to the indifference of government have caused this traditional art to perish in many parts of the country. (ANI)
