Google releases full report of US inquiry into street data collection probe
Apr 29, 2:53 pm
London, Apr 29 (ANI): Google has released a report of the US Federal Communications Commission's inquiry into the sensitive data it collected from millions of unknowing households while operating specially equipped cars for its Street View service.Google released the report after wrangling with the FCC over which details to reveal publicly. The revelations raise new questions about Google captured personal information over a two-year period. The report points the finger at a rogue engineer who, it says, intentionally wrote software code that captured payload data information, communication over the Internet including emails, passwords and search history from unprotected wireless networks, going beyond what Google says it intended. According to The Los Angeles Times, the report has blacked out the names of individuals. Those working on Street View told the FCC they had no knowledge that the payload data was being collected. The FCC has also accused Google of withholding an email that openly discussed the engineer's review of payload data with a senior manager on the Street view project. The FCC concluded in its report that collecting the data was not illegal, but it slapped
Google with a fine of 25,000 dollars this month for obstructing its investigation. (ANI)
