Google found to be partially in breach of Oracle's copyrights in $1 bln lawsuit

London, May 8 (ANI): Google's Android mobile operating system has breached some of American computer tech firm Oracle's copyrights on the Java programming language, a U.S. jury found.

Oracle is suing Google for one billion dollars for breaching seven patents and copyright claims relating to Java, the computer programming language Oracle took ownership of when it bought Sun Microsystems in 2010.

The firm has, however, scored only a partial victory in what is a three-part courtroom drama, The Telegraph reports.

According to the paper, Oracle could still face a setback over the chances of winning substantial damages, as the jury could not reach a decision on whether Google's actions constituted 'fair use' and were legally allowed.

The jury will now hear evidence relating to two patents that Oracle claims Google breached in the next phase of the trial.

Chief executive and founder of Oracle Larry Ellison began the legal battle against Google in August 2010.

Initially Oracle was seeking 6.1 billion dollars in damages from Google, which it claimed had 'knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle's Java-related intellectual property'.

Google had, however, successfully whittled Oracle's claim down to just two patents and a possible one billion dollar in damages.

The search giant has repeatedly dismissed the allegations, arguing that it does not violate Oracle's patents and that Oracle cannot copyright certain parts of Java in the first place. (ANI)
