London, Aug 3 (ANI): Social networking giant Facebook has claimed that there may be more than 83 million illegitimate accounts on its website.

In the filings published by the firm this week, it said that about 8.7 percent of its 955 million active accounts broke the website's rules.ccording to the BBC, Facebook claimed that duplicate profiles, belonging to already registered users, made up 4.8 percent of its membership figure, while user-misclassified accounts amounted to 2.4 percent including personal profiles for businesses or pets, and 1.5 percent of users were described as "undesirable".

Facebook defined the duplicate profiles as "an account that a user maintains in addition to his or her principal account" and said that the profiles tagged "user-misclassified" were only if "users have created personal profiles for a business, organisation, or non-human entity such as a pet".

The firm added that the "undesirable" accounts included those using fake names, which were "intended to be used for purposes that violate our terms of service, such as spamming ", the report said. (ANI)
