Android trounces iPhone in smart phone market: Report

   Aug 9, 12:44 pm

London, Aug.9 (ANI): Google's Android-operated cell phones have outsold rival Apple's iPhone, to extend their dominance in the smart phone market.

According to an International Data Corporation (IDC) survey, there were four Android phones for every iPhone shipped in the second quarter, which was up from a ratio of 2.5 to 1 in the same period last year.

The research showed that Samsung Electronics and other phone makers shipped nearly 105 million Android smart phones in the April-June quarter, giving Android a 68 percent share in the worldwide market, an increase of 47 percent from last year.

According to News24, the gains came largely at the expense of BlackBerry phones made by Research in Motion (RIM) and Symbian phones made largely by Nokia, as their market shares dropped below five percent.

The IDC report said that Samsung accounted for 44 percent of all Android phones in the second quarter and shipped more Android phones than the next seven Android phone makers combined, while HTC and Motorola Mobility , which is now owned by Google, are among the other Android makers.

The market share for Apple's iPhone, powered by its iOS software, fell slightly to 17 percent from 19 percent, even as the company shipped more iPhones than it did a year ago, the report said.

Apple, the no 2 smart phone maker, behind Samsung, is likely to get a boost when it releases its new iPhone model as expected this Autumn, it added. (ANI)
