Murder suspects of Indian-origin bride Anni Dewani to face trial in Feb in South Africa

London, Sept 21 (ANI): The trial of two men accused of murdering Indian-origin bride Anni Dewani on the orders of her Brit-Indian husband, Shrien Dewani, will reportedly start in the High Court in Cape Town in February.

Yesterday's remand hearing at Wynberg Regional Court near Cape Town marked the first court appearance for more than three months of Xolile Mngeni, who is being treated for a brain tumour. He appeared unsteady and was helped into the dock by his co-accused, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, The Independent reports.

Anni was killed last year during her honeymoon to cape Town, South Africa. Prosecutors there claim that her murder was ordered by Shrien, who has been fighting extradition to South Africa.

Last month, a district court judge had ruled that Shrien could be extradited to South Africa to face trial for organising his wife's murder, rejecting arguments that the Bristol businessman was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and was too unwell to be extradited, and that South African prison conditions would violate his human rights.

British Home Secretary Theresa May has the right to overrule Judge Riddle till October 10. If she does not, Dewani still has the right to appeal.

Documents released by the prosecution yesterday list five charges against Mngeni and Qwabe, including murder, kidnapping, robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. (ANI)
