Beijing considering to fit id chips in all registered dogs

   Nov 10, 6:39 pm

Beijing, Nov 10(ANI): The Chinese Government is considering to expand a pilot project, which would enable all registered dogs to be fitted with identification chips in Beijing.

The Yuetan station is one of the districts that have been running the project since007.

The free chipping service is only open to owners who register their dogs, which costs 1,000 Yuan, the China Daily reports.

The information contained on the chip includes the breed, the dog's vaccination records and its owner's contact details.

"The digital chip can assist residents in finding missing pets and decrease the number of stray dogs in the capital," Yuetan Park Police Station's dog registration officer,Qi Huaaid.

She said the information on the chip can even act as a "pooch passport", making it easier for people to travel with their pets.

Officials proposing to roll out the program across the city said they hoped the new plan ill boost dog registration.

"Chipping dogs will allow us to improve our management of these animals. It will also help authorities monitor the whereabouts of large dogs, which are banned from inner-city Beijing, as well as those that haven't received the proper vaccinations," Beijing people's Congress' Rural Affairs Director Lei Decai said.

However, some owners have cast doubt on how effective the program will be in boosting dog registration.

"The point of the chip is to boost registrations, but (even with the free chip) I can't see what benefits you get for paying the steep 1,000-Yuan fee," a Chinese citizen, Zhao Yifan said. (ANI)
