Flash floods cause havoc in Fijian island

   Mar 30, 1:55 pm

Melbourne, Mar.12 (ANI): Flash floods on Friday caused havoc on the Fijian island of Viti Levu.

News.com.au quoted local Fijian reports, as saying that the floods have cut off access to highways and forced evacuations.

The reports also said that some residents have climbed to the rooftops of their houses to shelter themselves from the rising waters.

Heavy rains have caused rivers to burst their banks in the west of the main island Viti Levu, taking water levels higher than those experienced during a six-day deluge in January which claimed 11 lives, meteorologists said.

Police said they were not aware of any deaths in the latest disaster, which have cut off the town of Nadi, home to Fiji's international airport, as well as other centres including Ba, Lautoka, Rakiraki and Sigatoka.

The disaster management office is monitoring the situation, reports said. (ANI)
