US Marines arrives for training in Australia

Darwin, Apr 4 (ANI): The first batch of US Marines have landed in Darwin and will be undertaking training for the next six months.

Over the next six months, American Marines will undergo bilateral training with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) under a program of enhanced cooperation, which was agree to during the visit of President Barrack Obama to Australia, last November.

According to The Age, Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Defence Minister Stephen Smith and Northern Territory Chief Minister Paul Henderson said, this was latest development that strengthened ties between US and Australia.

They said, "It also supports Australia's long-held strategic interests in supporting US engagement in our region in a manner that promotes peace and stability. The initiative could also provide new opportunities for Australian and US engagement with our partners in the region."

Eventually, 2000 more Marines will arrive for training under the same program. They will form a 2500-strong Marine Air Ground Task Force ( MAGTF ) which comprises of command, aviation, ground and logistic elements along with equipment support of wheeled vehicles, artillery and aircraft.(ANI)
