Three dead in US yacht race 'collision'

   Apr 30, 1:31 pm

Washington, Apr 30 (ANI): At least three sailors have reportedly died after a yacht collided with a much larger ship during a race in the United States.

Race organizers, the Newport Sailing Association, said the wreckage indicated that the yacht collided with a ship much larger than the 37-foot vessel, The BBC reports.

US Coast Guards are looking for a fourth crewmember from the Yacht Aegean.

The Coast Guards had suspended yacht racing around San Francisco after a fatal accident that occurred earlier this month.

They said that the suspension was to see whether changes were needed to improve racing safety rules.

The identities of the dead and missing crew have not yet been released.

Race officials said that the Aegean disappeared from their tracking system a few miles off the coast near the border between the US-Mexico border, an area close to where the race route crossed shipping lanes. (ANI)

"This has never happened in the entire 65 years of the race that I'm aware of," the commodore of the Newport Sailing Association Chuck Iverson said.(ANI)
