Sarkozy to sue website claiming 'Gaddafi funded 2007 election campaign'

   May 1, 2:31 pm

Paris, May 1 (ANI): French President Nicolas Sarkozy has reportedly said that he would sue a website that claimed slain Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi offered to help fund his 2007 election campaign.

French news site Mediapart recently claimed that Gaddafi's regime offered to spend 30 million pounds on his first campaign.

The website published what it claimed was a Libyan document from 2006, signed by Gaddafi's then-intelligence chief Moussa Koussaan .

According to Sky News, Sarkozy has now dismissed the document as a 'crude forgery'.

"We will file a suit against Mediapart. This document is a crude forgery. The two people supposed to have sent and received this document have dismissed it," Sarkozy told France 2 television.

"There's a section of the press, of the media, and notably the site in question whose name I refuse to mention, that is prepared to fake documents. Shame on those who have exploited them," he added.

According to the report, in response, the editorial director for Mediapart, Francois Bonnet, described the accusation as 'simply grotesque and defamatory'. (ANI)
