Syrian Government accuses UN chief Ban Ki Moon of being 'biased'

   May 1, 5:23 pm

Damascus, May 1 (ANI): Syria has accused United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon of being 'biased' and urged him to issue statements to the world on the basis of comments made by UN monitors only.

Syrian deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mukdad said: "He is biased - very biased.he Telegraph quoted Mukdad as saying "We may forgive him for some of his statements, but now the UN monitors are in Syria he should base his statements on what they are saying".

Mukdad also accused the United States and France of openly trying to ensure the failure of the peace plan.

Unwilling to accept any blame for the collapse of the ceasefire deal, Mukdad insisted it was the rebels who were 'escalating their attacks' and that the Syrian regime had the right to defend itself.

He also accused the West of conspiring to establish Islamist and Al-Qaeda regimes across the Middle East

"This is what the West wants - extremist and Al-Qaeda forces controlling the whole region," The Telegraph quoted him as saying.

He said that those rebelling against President Bashar al-Assad's rule were 'criminals and drug-dealers'.

Mukdad said that there were now both Al-Qaeda and Muslim Brotherhood elements to the Syrian opposition, as well as a high criminal element, and claimed they had breached the ceasefire 1,600 times.

The peace plan, negotiated by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, aims to end more than a year of unrest thought to have killed at least 9,000 people. (ANI)
