Lawmakers top list of graft suspect arrested in Indonesia in 2012

Jakarta, May 8 (Xinhua-ANI): The members of Indonesian parliament have topped the list of people who allegedly broke the law and have been arrested as suspects for corruption so far this year, media quoting data from anti-corruption watchdog reported here on Tuesday."There are six people [involved in corruption] from the House of Representatives and DPRD [Regional Representatives Council]," Johan Budi, spokesman of the watchdog known as the Corruption Eradication Commission or KPK was quoted by the Jakarta globe as saying.Among the lawmakers who are being investigated by KPK this year are Wa Ode Nurhayati, a graft suspect for the regional infrastructure development budget 2011, Democratic Party lawmaker Angelina Sondakh, a graft suspect for the construction of an athlete's inn for the SEA Games, and Central Java Representative Council Speaker Murdoko, a graft suspect for the Kendal district budget 2003-2004.Coming in second on the list were individuals from private institutions, followed by government officials, including mayors, governors and high-rank state employees.
Indonesia has struggled to fight rampant graft in the country, scores of officials from active central bank governor to lawmakers have been sent to jail and undergone legal process for corruption charges. (Xinhua-ANI)
