Convicted 'Osama CIA op' doctor's life under threat: Pak Intelligence

   May 29, 4:48 pm

Peshawar, May 29 (ANI): An intelligence agency has submitted a report to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti detailing threats to convicted doctor Shakil Afridi's life.

Dr Shakil Afridi was sentenced to 33 years imprisonment for helping the CIA track down Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

According to the report, there are 3000 detainees in the Central Jail Peshawar and many of them have negative sentiments against Dr Afridi, reports The News.

The CM has issued directions to provide security to the doctor as a high-profile detainee. The jail authorities have provided two unarmed security guards to him.

Intelligence officials had earlier said keeping Dr Shakil Afridi in Peshawar's central prison was no less than keeping him in plain sight of the Taliban who are purportedly baying for his blood.

They said the location and accessibility of the prison makes it an easy target for the Taliban. Flanked on one side by the Grand Trunk Road, and the other three sides by the congested area of Saddar, the jail can easily be targeted by militants, especially those from the adjoining Khyber Agency.

The intelligence sources claimed the Taliban are considering two options at the moment- to attack the prison, take Dr Afridi with them and have their leadership decide his fate, or have an inmate from the jail kill the doctor.

Intelligence officials had recommended the shifting of Dr Afridi from Peshawar to Islamabad for now, before a future plan is chalked out. (ANI)
