Sydney, June 12 (ANI): A man who was involved in an unprovoked attack on an Indian student has been jailed for just 17 months in Australia.

According to Herald Sun, Judge Barbara Cotterell told Grant Timothy Moore, 25, that he was involved in a 'completely gratuitous act of violence' against Baljinder Singh .

Moore was armed with a screwdriver and his accomplice, Jesse Donnachie, had a knife, when they confronted Singh near Carnegie railway station on May 25, 2009.

The knife and the screwdriver were later found by police less than one kilometre away from Singh, and Moore was identified from his DNA found on the handle of the screwdriver.

Singh was stabbed in the abdomen and had to be rushed to hospital, The Age reports.

The attack resulted in protests from Indian students in both India and Australia. (ANI)
