Assange asks UK Supreme Court to reopen extradition case

London, June 13 (ANI): Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has reportedly asked Britain's Supreme Court to reopen his case, in a bid to block his extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted over sex crime allegations.

British Supreme Court spokesman Ben Wilson confirmed today that papers had been lodged in the high-profile case.

Last month, the UK Supreme Court ruled that Assange would be extradited to Sweden.

But his lawyers challenged the validity of the judgment and have asked the top court to reopen the case, The Courier Mail reports.

According to the report, Wilson said that justices could choose to reject the challenge, ask for written submissions, or hold a new hearing.

He said he couldn't give a timescale for any eventual decision.

The legal saga began in Sweden in August 2010 when Assange was accused of raping a woman, and of sexually assaulting another woman.

He insists the sex was consensual and earlier claimed the charges are politically motivated.

Assange had earlier expressed fears that extradition to Stockholm would lead to extradition to the US on espionage or conspiracy charges. (ANI)
