New contempt of court law attempt to provide immunity to privileged class: Pak SC

   Jul 24, 12:22 pm

Islamabad, July 24 (ANI): Justice Khawaja of the Pakistan Supreme Court has said that an attempt has been made to provide immunity to the privileged class through the new contempt of court law.

A five-judge bench of the apex court resumed the hearing of petitions against the recently passed contempt of court law.

The Dawn quoted petitioner Liaquat Qureshi, as saying that the new contempt law was against the Islamic fundamentals, adding that the parliament had passed the law without adequate consideration.

Earlier outside the Supreme Court building, Attorney General Irfan Qadir said the parliament had unlimited powers and that amendments passed by it could not be challenged.

During an earlier hearing, the court had observed that "the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court cannot be curtailed by the parliament by regulating the law". (ANI)
