Cuban dissident 'driven off road' to death, claims family

Havana, July 24 (ANI): Family members of Cuban dissident Oswaldo Paya, who died in a car crash on Sunday, believe his car was 'driven off the road'.

According to The BBC, at a funeral mass attended by hundreds of people in Havana, Paya's son, Oswaldo, said his father had received many death threats.

An official statement said the driver lost control of the car as it drove on a road and hit a tree.

Paya, 60, was one of Cuba's main pro-democracy campaigners.

Fellow activist Harold Cepero, 31, was also killed in an accident near the city of Bayamo, in eastern Granma Province.

Two other people, one Swede and one Spaniard, were injured.

However, an official enquiry into the matter has been launched.

Paya is best-known as the founder of the Varela Project, a campaign to gather signatures in support of a referendum on laws guaranteeing civil rights.

The Cuban Government has described him as an agent of the United States, who was working to undermine the country's revolution. (ANI)
