Female U.S. army officer becomes first openly gay flag officer

Washington, Aug. 12 (ANI): Army Reserve officer Tammy Smith has become the first openly gay flag officer to serve in the U.S. military after being promoted to the rank of Army brigadier general.

Her promotion comes a year after the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" law that banned gays from serving openly in the U.S. military.

According to New York Daily News, Smith "is also publicly acknowledging her sexuality for the first time, making her the first general officer to come out as gay while still serving."

Smith, a 26-year Army veteran, said her sexuality is not relevant to the role she plays in the armed services.

"I don't think I need to be focused on that. What is relevant is upholding Army values and the responsibility this carries," she said. (ANI)
