Alcohol, drugs lead to one Aussie tourist's death every nine days in Bali

Jakarta, Aug. 13 (ANI): One Australian dies in Bali, Indonesia, every nine days, while hundreds more need consular help after experiencing problems, new figures have revealed.

Consular officials said that alcohol and drugs have led to many accidents, while nightclub fights are among the biggest causes of trouble for thousands of Australians, who visit the tropical island every year.

Information released by the Department of Foreign Affairs reveals that 39 Australians die d in Bali in 2011- 2012.

"The most common reasons for illness or hospitalisation amongst young people who travel to Bali are injuries due to motorbike accidents and nightclub fights," the Daily Telegraph quoted a DFAT spokesman, as saying.

"Factors that cause these accidents are inexperience, unfamiliar road and traffic conditions and alcohol/drug consumption. Nightclub fights can often break out between friends and may be fuelled by drugs and alcohol," he added.

He said traffic accidents were the biggest cause of death after natural causes or pre-existing conditions.

He said the lack of insurance; the lack of coverage for pre-existing illnesses, or the lack of cash to pay medical bills were also key reasons why Australians often sought consular help.

"We have recently seen a marked increase in cases involving young male travellers, 20 to 30, with mental health issues," he added. (ANI)
