New York, Aug 31(ANI): French Open champion Li Na has been knocked out of the US Open in the first round by Romanian teenager Simona Halep.

Fifth-seeded Li committed 54 unforced errors, 35 more than her World No.53 opponent, to lose the match 6-3, 7-5.

It is Li's second successive opening round exit at the Flushing Meadow, Xinhua reports.

The women's second round of US Open will now be without all three of this year's major champions - the first time that has happened since 1971.

Earlier, Australian Open winner Kim Clijsters had withdrawn because of an injury, while Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova went down in straight sets to Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru on Monday. (ANI)
