Wimbledon to start a week later from 2015 to help players adjust from clay to grass

London, July 20 (ANI): Wimbledon would start a week later from its current century-old schedule from 2015, to allow players more time to adjust from playing on clay at the French Open to playing on grass at the All England Club.

The All England Club had stepped up their campaign to move their big tournament fortnight back by one week, and on Thursday, they announced that an agreement had been secured.

In 2015, Wimbledon will begin from June 29 and end on July 12. The move is unquestionably a sensible one in a calendar of more than 10 months to allow greater transition time between the sport's two most reverse surfaces.

There were, of course, other considerations, one of which is a desire not to collide so much with the major football championships that occur every other year, The Daily Mail reports.

The All England Club would preferably have liked to have made the move in 2014 to avoid a clash with the Brazil World Cup, but the unforeseen effect for other tournaments is sufficient for more time to be needed to re-arrange the schedule.

Various top players had called for more time to be provided to adjust from the clay court to the green courts. (ANI)
