Black footballer wins 68K pounds in landmark 'race-victimisation' case against English club

London, Aug 11 (ANI): A black footballer, who was unfairly expelled by his former club, has been awarded more than 68,000 pounds following a landmark legal victory in his race victimisation case.

Mark McCammon, 33, had brought the racism case against Gillingham, which is believed to be the first of its kind against a British football club, after he was dismissed for alleged misconduct last year.

According to the Daily Star, the former Barbados international claimed that he had been put "through hell" by the club as he was treated differently from other white players.

The 6ft 2in footballer said that he was ordered to come into the ground amid "treacherous" winter conditions while no white players were called.

The player, who signed for the Gills in 2008 on 2,500 pounds a week, also said the club tried to "frustrate him out" by refusing to pay his private medical bills after he suffered from an injury.

In contrast, the former Charlton, Swindon, Millwall and Brighton player said that a white team-mate was flown to Dubai for treatment by an eminent physiotherapist at the club's expense, the report said.

However, Gillingham's Chairman, Paul Scally described McCammon's race claims as being made "maliciously and without foundation", and said that Kent-based club might appeal against the judgment. (ANI)
