London, June 14 (ANI): The US-based Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (
ICANN), the organization that manages web domain names, unveiled nearly 1930 applications for new web address endings.Presently, there are just 22 generic Top-Level Domains, or gTLDs
, in use, including .com.Now, suffixes such as .BBC, . Sex, . beer and .app will be among scores of new web addresses that will begin to appear next year. The most popular applications were for .app, where 13 organisations want to administer the domain. Ten applications were received for .art and 11 for .inc, the Telegraph reports.According to the report, Internet search giant Google had already said it is applying for .lol, .google, .youtube and many others, and appears to have applied for 101 in total. Amazon has made 76 applications, going head-to-head with Google in many instances, including .app.The bulk of applications were from brands applying for their own names, such as electronics manufacturer Canon applying for .canon.Rod Beckstrom, Icann's chief executive, said that liberalisation of the rules could change how users perceive web addresses."The internet is about to change forever - now a powerful change is coming," the paper quoted Beckstrom, as saying. He also said the applications, which are not all guaranteed to be approved, would be independently assessed.
