Oz students battle it out for 'best formal dress' on Facebook

Melbourne, July 22 (ANI): Australian schoolgirls' rivalry for the best formal dress has started on Facebook, which is long before the actual 'big night'.

The girls are posting pictures of the dress they plan to wear, warning others "don't copy".

Menai High School year 10 student Brie Armson-Graham said that past dress double-ups prompted her and her friends to create the site.

"There was loads of drama with formal dresses at Menai last year," the Daily Telegraph quoted Armson-Graham as saying.

Year 12 student at Brigidine College, St Ives, Alex Marshall, said that after spotting the dresses on the site some girls have already been forced to return matching outfits.

"A few girls at our year 10 formal ended up wearing the same dress and were a little upset about it on the night," she said.

"The Facebook page requests to upload a photo of your formal dress to avoid someone turning up in the same dress. So we decided to set up a group online so girls didn't get embarrassed about turning up in the same dress.

"Adelaide has noticed that someone had the same dress she bought for the formal so she has already gone out looking for another one," she added.

Manager of My Catwalk Double Bay, Marlene Mangioni, revealed that purchasing a unique formal dress is a priority for her customers.

"Looking unique and finding something that no one else is going to have on the night is a very big topic of conversation," she said.

"It is fierce competition, but a healthy one.

"We are very mindful of this and only buy one or two of each size in our designs," she said.

Designer Jayson Brunsdon acknowledged that dress double-ups were embarrassing, but he wasn't sure how year 10 and 12 girls have the budget to purchase one-off dresses for formals.

"How are these girls going about not wearing the same dress as someone else on their budget," Brunsdon said.

"You need to have a pretty high budget to get a dress no one else will be wearing.

"If you are not going to be caught wearing the same dress as someone else you are going to need to be buying a one-off," he added. (ANI)
