Twitter apologises for encouraging NBC to file complaint against British journalist

London, Aug 1 (ANI): Microblogging site Twitter has issued a public apology after admitting that it had "proactively" identified a tweet in violation of their rules and encouraged the staff of the US broadcaster, NBC, to file a complaint so that the user's account could be suspended.

The site apologised for suspending the account of a journalist in the UK, after he posted the email address of a NBC executive, following a row over the coverage of the London 2012 Olympics.

Christopher McCloskey, NBC's Vice President of Communications claimed that Twitter had initiated the ban and not NBC.

"We want to apologize[sic] for the part of this story that we did mess up," The Telegraph quoted Twitter as saying in a statement on its blog.

"The team working closely with NBC around our Olympics partnership did proactively identify a Tweet that was in violation of the Twitter Rules and encouraged them to file a support ticket with our Trust and Safety team to report the violation, as has now been reported publicly," it added.

Earlier, Bureau Chief for The Independent in Los Angeles, Guy Adams's Twitter account was suspended by the social site, after he posted a series of critical tweets about NBC's Olympics coverage, culminating in the publication of a corporate email address belonging to Gary Zenkel, president of NBC Olympics.

Alex Macgillivray , Twitter's general counsel, also added his personal apology to Adams.

"@guyadams Let me to add my personal apology for your suspension," the paper quoted Macgillivray, as writing.

Adams, who had his Twitter account reinstated, said the microblogging site had failed to adhere to its own policy. (ANI)
