Washington DC, [USA] Oct 23 (ANI): Famous Japanese filmmaker Naomi Kawase will direct the official film for the 2020 edition of the Olympic Games set to be held in Tokyo.
She was selected unanimously by the International Olympic Committee and Organising Committee of the Games who are in charge of reviewing proposals from the host nation's filmmaking talent, Deadline reported.
Kawase was chosen after Japanese and international film experts, the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage were consulted. She now holds the reputation of being the fifth woman to direct an Official Film. Caroline Rowland (London 2012), Gu Jun (Beijing 2008), Mai Zetterling (Munich 1972) and Leni Riefenstahl (Berlin 1936) are the four other women who had the honour of directing an official film for the world's biggest sporting event.
Like every other official film, the focus would be on capturing the soul of a specific edition of the Games.
Speaking to Deadline, Kawase said that it is an honour because the Olympic Games is returning to Tokyo after 56 years.
Kawase started her career by directing documentaries and short films and became the youngest director to receive Cannes film festivals' Camera d'Or for her first feature, Suzaku back in 1997. (ANI)
