Guwahati Silk Expo showcases quintessence of Indian silk

Guwahati (Assam) [India], Apr 12 (ANI): Indian silk has been the perfect example of quality and class, for ages. Over the years, artisans from across the country have yarned some of the best quality silk products that have received global recognition.

With the coming of age and modernisation, the luxury fabric has taken a backseat. In a recent bid to spread awareness about the importance of silk and to encourage people to buy pure silk, Guwahati hosted a five-day long silk expo, which saw a huge turnout of visitors from across the country.

Being famous for its incredible natural scenic beauty and innumerable species of flora and fauna, silk is endemic to the northeastern state of Assam.

The expo showcased three major types of indigenous silk - Muga or the golden silk, white or the pat silk, and Eri or the warm silk.

The event, organised by the Silk Mark Organisation, acted as a platform for local entrepreneurs involved in silk production and business.

The veteran Assamese actress, Moloya Goswami, who inaugurated the event, said, "The remarkable thing of this expo is that you can get pure outfits here. One can get what they are actually searching for, that is pure silk".

A variety of textile materials and commercially produced silk products from different states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar, and UP were also displayed at the expo.

As many as 43 exhibitors with Muga, Eri, mulberry, Tassar fabrics and products from seven different states including West Bengal, Bihar, Karnataka, UP, Assam participated in the expo.

An exhibitor from Allahabad said, "I have been coming here for the last four years and being a part of this expo is amazing. People favour silk and are really passionate about it. The response is really good here. This time the focus is on Tassar fabrics, chicken work, handwork materials, hand painting, and brush painted materials".

Weaving looms are found in almost all the household of the state of Assam and over the year's silk products has gained international recognition attracting both domestic and international tourists. This year the silk expo was no less in attracting visitors from every nook and corner.

A silk testing counter was also set up for the visitors who would prefer to try their hand in testing the silk products. (ANI)
