'Smart' pyjamas to monitor, improve your sleep

Washington D.C. [USA], Apr 1 (ANI): Ever thought of pyjamas analysing how you sleep? Researchers have come up with ‘Smart’ pyjamas with self-powered sensors which unobtrusively and continually monitor the breathing, heartbeat and posture while sleeping. These ‘smart’ pyjamas can be effective in giving information for enhancing sleep patterns.
This research would be presented at the American Chemical Society Spring 2019 National Meeting & Exposition.
"Our smart pyjamas overcame numerous technical challenges. We had to inconspicuously integrate sensing elements and portable power sources into everyday garments, while maintaining the weight, feel, comfort, function and ruggedness of familiar clothes,” says Trisha L. Andrew, Ph.D., who led the team
She further added, “We also worked with computer scientists and electrical engineers to process the myriad signals coming from the sensors so that we had clear and easy-to-understand information.”
Prior to this, studies have suggested that quality sleep ameliorates mental acuity and hones an individual’s decision-making skills.
A process is known as ‘Reactive Vapor Deposition’ is the key to these pyjamas.
"This method allows us to synthesize a polymer and simultaneously deposit it directly on the fabric in the vapor phase to form various electronic components and, ultimately, integrated sensors," Andrew says.
The garment includes two types of self-powered sensors that detect "ballistic movements," or pressure changes.
Andrew estimates the product could be in the market within two years for a price ranging $100-$200. (ANI)
