The cost of a packet of peanuts, that's all it takes to feed the needy

New Delhi [India], Apr 13 (ANI): Poverty is a very complicated issue, but feeding a child isn’t, goes the dictum.
When it comes to actually doing something for society, most of us don’t understand where to start from. Turns out, it is not that complex. A Delhi-based NGO, Uday Foundation, lets you feed the needy for the price of a packet of peanuts.
All you need to do is donate Rs 11 using ‘Paytm’ and in return, the foundation will feed poor patients and their families outside Delhi’s prominent government hospitals such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Safdarjung Hospital.
If you have been to AIIMS, you will attest to the fact that the majority of the underprivileged patients admitted in Government hospitals are those who come from nearby states and are often poor. Most of these people cut back on food expenditure to save money.
At times, the family members of terminally ill patients do not have time to look after themselves, leave alone having food on time, which is a basic necessity as they are always busy taking care of their loved ones.
Here’s where the foundation comes in. Uday Foundation serves free and wholesome, food to families of underprivileged patients outside these hospitals.
The foundation was established in 2007 by Rahul Verma. It was an incident that took place in 2006, which inspired Verma to initiate this journey of helping people around him.
In 2006, Rahul was blessed with a baby boy who he named Uday. What should have been the best day of his life, turned out to be a nightmare when he found out that his son was born with multiple birth defects. The doctors declared that Uday needed immediate medical help and also asserted that his son’s chances of survival were scarce.
Rahul took his son to multiple private hospitals, before his final stop at AIIMS. During his son’s treatment, Rahul spent a lot of time inside the hospital premise, where he noticed other patients and their families spending hours and days in the hospital without proper sleep and food.
“I saw these people, who came from outside Delhi, in the hospital, waiting and waiting for hours without resting and eating proper food. And I realised how much they were suffering. I want to help them,” Rahul shared.
The foundation has been conducting food distribution drive every day outside various government-run hospitals in Delhi for the past seven years
On an average, the organization feeds 30-40,000 poor people in a month, who are either patients or their attendants.
As a donor, you can choose to pay for just one meal, one meal a day, or multiple meals a day. To connect with these people on a more personal level, you can even volunteer to serve them the food and join the foundation’s food distribution drive.
Rahul decided to tie up with Paytm because a large number of people in the country use the digital platform these days, making it easier to make the donation.
“We were functioning before as well. But after we joined hands with Paytm, the response has been overwhelming,” said Rahul.
While Uday is still undergoing some minor treatments, he is a healthy boy and the foundation which was set up on his name is continuing to help those in need. (ANI)
