Rajouri (Jammu and Kashmir) [India] Jan 27 (ANI): Snow clearing operations began at Dehra ki Gali road in Rajouri district and other parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.
The state has been witnessing heavy snowfall for the past several days. Due to the avalanche and heavy snow accumulation at different stretches of the highway, the vehicular movement had been stopped.
In some of the remote areas, electricity and other necessary supplies have also been cut off.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, a 40-day long period of harsh winter. Chillai-Kalan commences each year on December 21 and concludes on January 30.
During this period, water bodies situated in the region freeze, due to which locals light small fires each day around rivers and water taps for the deposited snow to melt.
According to the weather experts, the snowfall around this time provides relief from the intense cold but the phenomena have not occurred this time unlike last seasons when the region experienced early snowfall. The open skies with no cloud cover have made the conditions worse as it reduces the chances of any kind of downpour.
"A thunderstorm accompanied with hailstorm at isolated places likely over Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir, lower reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Heavy snown and rainfall at isolated places likely over Jammu and Kashmir," predicted IMD.
The cold conditions have also intensified in Himachal Pradesh. Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district records minimum temperature at minus 17 Degree Celsius.
, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur also assured that all roads in the state that are blocked due to snowfall would be cleared within three days. (ANI)
