Imphal, Aug 23 (ANI): Human rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila, who recently ended her 16-year-fast against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), today appeared before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Imphal West. Talking to media, Sharmila said that she had decided to change strategy in the fight against AFSPA as she felt that fight alone by staying in solitary confinement will not be able fulfil her demand. She said she now believes that without people's support, her movement will not be successful. She said the system need to change and for that the people have to go for election. "If people fight together our destination will be met," she said. She further said she will be moving to New Delhi, and would join a mass campaign organised by North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS). Sharmila was arrested and released several times under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, she rejected the allegations that she ever tried to commit suicide, saying she was on a hunger strike demanding AFSPA withdrawal. (ANI)
