New Delhi [India], Aug 16 (ANI): Soaked in religious fervour and festive spirit, thousands of devotees thronged in various temples across the nation on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday to celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. One of the main highlights of this fun-filled festival was the Dahi Handi event. Devotees in Mathura gathered at Shri Krishna Janmbhoomi Temple---where Lord Krishna is believed to be born---to celebrate Janmashtami. People were seen dancing on devotional songs and chanted "Hare Krishna, Hare Rama". While the Mumbaikars took part in the traditional 'Dahi Handi' festival with 'Govindas' showing up in full strength to perform the ritual of forming a human pyramid to reach the Dahi Handi, thousands thronged the ISKCON temple in New Delhi to celebrate the auspicious occasion. People fasted throughout the day while prayers are offered all night and religious hymns were sung in the temples as part of the festivities. In Bhopal, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was seen playing dandiya with his wife at the Chief Minister's residence. President, Vice President and Prime Minister all earlier greeted the people on the occasion of Janmashatami. According to the mythology, it is believed that Lord Krishna was born at the midnight and is the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami Tithi, the eighth day of the month of Bhadrapada according to the Hindu almanac. (ANI)
