New Delhi [India], July 19 (ANI): Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu has come a long way from his humble roots. From being a farmers' son to a Union Minister and now being handpicked as the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) pick for the post of Vice President, he has proven to become an indispensable cog in the wheel of the Centre. Known for his witty one-liners, the BJP veteran is a politician who holds maximum Rajya Sabha experience among all previous Vice-Presidents of India and is also the lone politico to have served as the Parliamentary Affairs Minister. By tabling Naidu's name, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government has exuded its understanding of the spirit and sensitivity of the office of the Vice President, who also plays the most important role in the Upper House as its chief. Naidu's selection for the Constitutional post has shown the importance the BJP ruled government gives to cooperative federalism and healthy Parliamentary functioning. Son of a farmer and a member of the Rajya Sabha since 1998, Naidu has been a two-time MLA of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, a four-time member of the Rajya Sabha, and held several important portfolios in government. Having been the minister for rural development, urban development, housing and poverty alleviation, parliamentary affairs, and information and broadcasting under two prime ministers, his nomination is fully in spirit of the position and duties of the Vice President of India. Naidu has been selected from Karnataka and Rajasthan. Thus by representing both North and South in the Rajya Sabha Naidu, in the words of Prime Minister Modi, is a fitting nomination that will add stature to the office. A member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he has been involved with its student wing, the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) since his college days, and has also served as the spokesperson of his party for many years, coming across as a non-confrontational person; and someone with the management abilities and political acumen to handle the pressures of the post. Announcement of Naidu's candidature was welcomed by the politicos from across the length and breadth of the nation. "I know @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu for years. Have always admired his hardwork & tenacity. A fitting candidate for the office of Vice President," Tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "A farmer's son, @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu brings years of experience in public life and is admired across the political spectrum. The years of Parliamentary experience @MVenkaiahNaidu Garu has will help him discharge the important role of Rajya Sabha Chairperson," he added. Union Minister Piyush Goyal said Naidu's victory in next month's vice-presidential elections would be unprecedented with support coming from across the political spectrum. Goyal told ANI, "We are very proud that he is going to be the next vice-president of India. Across parties, there is love, affection and adulation for Venkaiah Naidu. He is loved by all parties and leaders. His victory is going to be unprecedented with support coming from all parties across the political spectrum." Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya also said that Naidu's nomination for the post of vice president is a proud moment for the Telugu community. "The decision by the NDA for Venkaiah Naidu's nomination is most appreciable. For Telugu people, it is a very proud moment. I want all parties to support him. I also wish him good luck," Dattatreya said. Adding to the praises pouring in for Naidu, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said more than a leader, the former is a 'socio-political activist'. "There is nobody better suited for this position. There are certain skills that he possesses which make him the best suited for this stature," Singh told ANI. Meanwhile, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also expressed his best wishes to Naidu and asserted that he will do justice to the post if given the opportunity. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu also echoed similar sentiments and averred that Naidu is the suitable choice for the post of Vice President. "A farmer's son will become the next Vice President, Venkaiah ji is a dedicated person. Matter of great happiness," said Shivraj Chouhan. "Experienced & veteran Venkaiah Naidu is suitable for the role of #VicePresident in all ways," said Chandrababu Naidu. The AIADMK Paneer Selvam faction has also extended its support to Naidu. Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh has too backed Naidu. (ANI)
