Sydney [Australia], Jan 29 (ANI): Australia wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey on Tuesday said playing against best teams early in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 will give a solid start to his side.
Australia will begin their 2020 campaign against Pakistan on October 24 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The hosts will then take on the two-time champions West Indies on October 28 at the Perth Stadium.
Speaking at the fixtures launch event, the 27-year-old said: “It is a solid start for us. We have got Pakistan, ranked number one (on the ICC T20I team rankings), and then we come up against West Indies. So for us, it is really exciting to play against the best really early in the competition.”
Carey believes that in such a prestigious tournament, it is important to get the momentum as the matches go into the final.
"We have seen in the Big Bash getting momentum going into the final is so crucial. So, to start thinking about it is pretty exciting," he said.
Having home advantage, Australia have a point to prove to themselves and to their country as they have never won a premier T20I competition. Their best performance was in 2010 in the Caribbean, when they defeated Pakistan in the semi-final, however, Australia lost to England in a tight final.
After their first two matches, Australia will meet New Zealand along with two teams, who will join them in the Super 12.
Carey, who is looking forward to playing at electric stadiums, said that the hosts will want all the home support to motivate Australia.
"For the World Cup, to have all the countries here, the Indian fans, the Afghanistan fans… shiver down the spine already!"
The tournament will be held across Australia in four host cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Perth.
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will take place from October 18 to November 15 after the Women’s T20 World Cup, which is scheduled from February 21 to March 8. For the first time, both the events will be held as standalone in the same year and country. (ANI)
