Among the others who wished the Indian batting mainstay were all-rounder Hardik Pandya, opener Shikhar Dhawan, Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and former South African Test cricketer Jonty Rhodes. Kohli, who has played 48 Tests and 176 ODIs, took over captaincy in the longest format of the game after Mahendra Singh Dhoni's retirement in 2014. Widely regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world, it was under Kohli that India regained the number one spot in the Test rankings following their emphatic victories over New Zealand in the first two matches of the three-match series, which the hosts won by 3-0.
